Conclusion

It was an honour for me to be able to spend the last few months of my grandfather’s life with him, before he passed away in the Trinity Gardens nursing home in 2002. I was lucky to be able to learn about my grandfather’s life; Leung Lee was an amazing man, with what he accomplished through hard work and determination.

Mathew and Jane Sturts had been there for me since I was nine years of age, with me not knowing anything from when Ray Chuck was shot dead. It was a hard journey, beginning with Leung Lee migrating to Australia from Canton — what had unfolded in my grandfather’s life, and his growing family, was a lead-up to Norman Lee and the Great Bookie Robbery of 1976, and the curse that would affect the tribe for decades afterwards.

The research that I collected contained secrets kept for decades — this is a story I felt had to be told, on behalf of my family and on behalf of all that suffered from the events surrounding the bookie robbery. Something of this level should never take place in Australia again.

I dedicate this book to the people that make up the true story of the curse, and to the people that went through these intense emotional times. This book is a tribute to the unsolved murders, the disappearances and the unsolved crimes from that period of Australian history. The passing of Leung Lee, one of the first dim sim and spring roll manufacturers in Australia, marked the end of this period and a point where the story can be put behind — a point to close this chapter and to move forward.
